In memory of Walt

We never expect to lose the people closest to us—especially not suddenly. When it happens, it takes time to accept that this is our reality, that we’ll never get to see them again. Yucca Fest was supposed to be Walter Scott Roseboro III’s film to direct. But now, he’ll never get the chance.

I first met Walt in film school. Back then, he was making music videos, and I was filming environmental PSAs and skate videos. We became roommates with our friend Jon in the second half of college and stayed close long after graduation. We had a stack of ideas waiting for the right moment to bring them to life. Even when I moved to California and he went back home to Philadelphia, our friendship never wavered. He was my best man at my wedding.

On November 7th, 2018, my best friend was murdered—just six days before he was supposed to fly to California to begin pre-production with me. Even in the days leading up to his death, we were making last-minute plans, excited to get started.

I miss my friend every day. I wish I could have done something—anything—to change what happened. I wish I could talk to him one more time, but that’s no longer possible. All I can do now is dedicate this film to him—the movie he didn’t get to make—and hope he’s found peace.

See you on the other side, friend.
